Tiger Woods was arrested Friday at the scene of a rollover crash on Jupiter Island, Florida, after authorities said he showed signs of impairment following a collision that involved another vehicle.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened just after 2 p.m. near 281 Beach Road, a two lane stretch on Jupiter Island close to where Woods lives. Authorities said Woods struck another vehicle and his Land Rover rolled over. The Sheriff’s Office said Woods was not injured.
Sheriff John Budensiek said at a briefing that Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Officials said Woods displayed signs of impairment at the scene.
In a separate account of the incident, investigators suspected impairment related to drugs or medication after a breath test showed no alcohol, according to a Reuters report. Reuters also said Woods refused to provide a urine test while in custody.
Local video from the scene showed an SUV on its side as law enforcement worked the area, with the crash drawing immediate attention because of Woods’ high profile and the location near his home.
Authorities have not released full details on what led to the collision beyond the description that the incident involved another vehicle and ended in a rollover. The investigation was ongoing Friday evening.
The arrest adds another serious driving related episode to Woods’ public history. He survived a major rollover crash in February 2021 in California that caused significant injuries and altered his competitive schedule in the years that followed. Woods was also arrested on a DUI charge in 2017 near his home in Jupiter, Florida, a case that led to a widely covered police report and later statements from Woods about prescription medication.
Friday’s incident comes at a time when Woods has been largely limited to select appearances and nontraditional golf events while managing injuries. In recent months he has remained visible through the sport’s off course business and entertainment ventures, but his full tournament schedule has been uncertain, particularly with the Masters approaching in April.
For now, the only confirmed details from law enforcement are the ones that matter most: a two vehicle crash, a rollover, no reported injuries to Woods, and an arrest at the scene on suspicion of DUI as investigators continue to sort through what caused the impairment they said they observed
