Nicolas Cage is making an urgent effort to protect his $10.5 million Malibu home after a massive sinkhole opened outside the California beach property and continued expanding toward the residence, as reported [1] by Page Six.
The “Longlegs” actor rushed to file three permits after the sinkhole formed on Sept. 8. The applications addressed emergency protection, debris removal, shoring preparation, excavation and soil collection around the property.
Cage, 62, requested an emergency building permit from city officials. He received permission to place sandbags along the beach and against the exterior of the house to protect it from waves and prevent further coastal erosion.

Records also show officials approved additional permits for the removal of asphalt debris connected to the sinkhole. That work was intended to prepare the damaged area for shoring installation and excavation needed to collect soil samples.
All three permits were filed within days of the sinkhole’s formation. The swift applications came as the opening expanded far beyond the dimensions initially reported at the Malibu property.
The chasm was first described as measuring 30 feet by 30 feet. It has since grown around the side of Cage’s house and reached all the way to the front door.
Images from the scene showed the dramatic extent of the destruction outside the residence. The sinkhole swallowed Cage’s driveway, a portable toilet from a construction site, ladders and sections of a privacy fence.
No injuries were reported following the collapse. Firefighters nevertheless responded to the area because of a gas leak, adding another concern for residents dealing with the damaged roadway and restricted access.
Cage, who lives primarily in Nevada, was not believed to have been inside the Malibu house when the incident occurred. His representatives did not respond to requests for comment about the sinkhole or efforts to protect the property.
Days after the hole formed, the City of Malibu issued a “mandatory evacuation order” affecting the street. Officials also marked all 31 homes there “unsafe” because vehicles could no longer access the area.

Firefighters found the hole on September 8 while responding to a reported gas main break. No injuries were reported.
Officials believe coastal erosion caused it. It opened after a day of heavy rain and high surf from Hurricane Marie.

The loss of vehicular access meant fire and sheriff personnel would not be able to reach the affected properties. Sea Level Drive has only one way in and out, leaving the road blockage as a serious obstacle for residents and emergency responders.
The city explained: “The collapse of a beachfront driveway extended into the roadway, blocking resident and emergency access. Sea Level Drive has a single entry and exit.”
Cage took over the 4,000-square-foot home in 2024. The property includes a rooftop deck, private beach access and ocean views, but the expanding sinkhole has now consumed the driveway and moved directly alongside the residence.
The actor has not publicly addressed the damage or the emergency work authorized at the site. His response so far has been reflected in the permits filed shortly after the collapse appeared outside the property.
Weeks after the sinkhole formed, Cage resurfaced publicly at the opening night of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
He attended the event with his wife, Riko Shibata, 31, while the emergency surrounding his Malibu home remained unaddressed by him publicly.
