Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb on his throwing arm during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Coach Todd Bowles said Mayfield will undergo an MRI on Monday.

“He's going to get an MRI [Monday] just to see exactly what inside is wrong with it, so we'll know tomorrow,” Bowles said. X-rays did not reveal a fracture, but Bowles said the result will not be definitive until further imaging is examined.

An MRI can reveal subtle hairline cracks, soft tissue damage and ligament tears that X-rays cannot detect. A timetable for Mayfield’s recovery will be determined after the MRI results become available.

Mayfield was injured with 1:54 remaining as the Buccaneers attempted to come back from a 20-16 deficit. Facing fourth-and-13, Mayfield remained under pressure for several seconds, avoided multiple defenders and moved toward the right sideline before throwing a pass that Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel intercepted.

Minnesota inside linebacker Blake Cashman hit Mayfield as the quarterback released the ball. “I thought he was going to go down, but he kept staying alive,” Cashman said. “I just tried to get a hit on the quarterback to affect the throw.”

Cashman pumped his fist and joined his teammates in celebrating while Mayfield remained on the ground in pain. Buccaneers teammates and members of the training staff quickly gathered around the quarterback.

Mayfield did not speak to reporters after the game. He later left the locker room with his right hand wrapped in an ice bag.

“I was in shock,” left tackle Tristan Wirfs said. “It's tough. He's a competitor. He was trying to make a play at the end of the game. That's who he is. That's who he's always been.”

Tight end Cade Otton also reacted to Mayfield’s injury. “You just hurt for your brother, your friend,” Otton said.

“You just see how he fights for his teammates every single play. To be down like that, it sucks,” Otton added.

Buccaneers wide receiver Jalen McMillan will also undergo an MRI on Monday after injuring his left knee, a source told ESPN. According to the source, it is the same knee McMillan injured in camp, and the test will determine the extent of the damage and whether it is an aggravation of the previous issue or a new injury.

McMillan had returned to game action last week and was expected to have a much bigger role against Minnesota. On Tampa Bay’s first possession, Mayfield targeted him on 3rd and 5, but Vikings safety Josh Metellus broke up the pass and McMillan limped off the field.

It remains unclear whether McMillan suffered the injury while pivoting his body or upon contact. He was able to limp off the field without assistance.

“Definitely some adversity for him, and definitely going to say a prayer for him,” wide receiver Ted Hurst III said. “I just hope he can get back to where he wants to be at and feel like himself again.”

Rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels replaced Mayfield for Tampa Bay’s final drive and threw an interception on the final pass. The undrafted free agent from Kansas beat out veteran Jake Browning during the preseason and stands to become the Buccaneers’ quarterback going forward if Mayfield cannot play.

“Jalon right now,” Bowles said. “We haven't really gotten into it yet. We'll see what the MRI says tomorrow and then we'll kind of talk amongst ourselves and kind of see, but right now Jalon would probably go in.”

Mayfield’s 54 regular season starts since joining the Buccaneers are tied for the most in the league. He has not missed a start in Tampa Bay despite a season marked by injuries last year, when he appeared on the injury report for 10 out of 17 weeks.

“We'll see how he feels tomorrow and what can be done. I know he's going to be on top of it tonight, doing everything he can. We'll see what happens,” Wirfs said.

Otton said he knows Mayfield will work as hard as he can to return for his team. He also acknowledged the Buccaneers are 0-3 for the first time since 2014 and said everyone must pick up their game.
