Trail-blazing On Tuesday night, Alyssa Nakken of the San Francisco Giants made major league history by becoming the first woman to act as an on-field coach during a regular-season game.
After Giants coach Antoan Richardson was inexplicably dismissed from San Francisco's 13-2 triumph against the visiting San Diego Padres in the third inning, the 31-year-old Nakken took over at first base.
Following her presentation, the crowd at Oracle Park greeted Nakken with a standing ovation, her blonde braid dangling from her helmet. Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer also congratulated her with a handshake.
'I think we're all inspirations doing everything that we do on a day-to-day basis and I think, yes, this carries a little bit more weight because of the visibility, obviously there's a historical nature to it,' Nakken said. 'However, this is my job.'

Manager Gabe Kapler said Nakken had 'prepared for this moment' while working with Richardson and others.
'So it's not a foreign spot on the field for her. She does so many other things well that aren't seen,' he said. 'So it's nice to see her kind of be right there in the spotlight and do it on the field.'
During numerous 2020 exhibition games, Nakken served as the base coach.
Nakken was a standout first baseman for Sacramento State, batting .304 and earned All-Pacific Coast Softball Conference accolades in each of her four seasons with the club. She played softball, volleyball, and basketball at Woodland High School in Northern California.

According to the Sacramento Bee, she was also selected the 2012 conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year before graduating with a degree in psychology.
Nakken joined the Giants in 2014 as a health and wellness coordinator while pursuing her master's degree in sports management at the University of San Francisco.
